Tutorials: Several tutorial groups will be offered. For dates and rooms see the Lecture website and note that all tutorials will be held at the University Observatory, Scheinerstraße 1.
This lecture for Master of Astrophysics and Master of Physics students will give an introduction into the whole field of astrophysics.
The following topics will be covered in the first part of the lecture (until 3 December), held by Prof. Thomas Preibisch:
The second part of the lecture (from 5 December) will cover the topics of Galaxies, Structure of the Universe, and Cosmology and will be held by Prof. Joseph Mohr.
The PDFs of the lecture slides and the tutorial problem sets
are available (but password-protected) at this link
until the date of the final exam.
The required password will be communicated in the lecture.
The recommended book that has been adopted as the main general module text (for the first part of the lecture) is:
Carroll & Ostlie:
An Introduction to Modern Astrophysics
2nd Edition (September 2017), 1359 pages,
Cambridge University Press, ISBN: 9781108422161
For the part on stellar physics, another good reference is:
Guidry:
Stars and Stellar Processes
Cambridge University Press, ISBN: 9781107197886
As a supplementary reading for the module, we recommend the books
Hale Bradt:
Astrophysics Processes
