Astrophysics Tour

Munich is home to a constellation of renowned institutes, such as the University Observatory, the Max Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics, the Max Planck Institute for Astrophysics, and the European Southern Observatory. These institutions are at the forefront of European astronomical research, spearheading the development of some of the world's largest telescopes and engaging in cutting-edge research. To showcase the incredible opportunities available to USM students, we organized a series of guided visits to these institutes.

  • Date: April 8, 2024
  • Time: 10:00 AM - 5:15 PM
  • Start Location: Theresienstraße 37

We are pleased to report that the event was a success, thanks to the participation of both new and current students and the efforts of the staff, PR officers, and Ph.D. representatives across all four institutions. We would also like to extend a special thanks to Catarina, Tommy, Mari, and Leon for providing an exclusive glimpse of the state-of-the-art facilities and diverse research opportunities available to motivated students.

From exploring the rich history of astronomy with the Fraunhofer telescope at the University Observatory Munich, to studying the latest spectrographs and instruments at the Max Planck Institutes for Astrophysics and Extraterrestrial Physics, the visits were eye-opening. The tour concluded with the opportunity to witness the real-time assembly of the Extremely Large Telescope at the European Southern Observatory headquarters, which was undoubtedly one of the main highlights of the day.

In addition to the scientific aspects, these visits also served as a comprehensive hands-on orientation for new students, familiarizing them with key centers of student life in Munich. The tour included stops at essential facilities such as the Examination Office, Lecture Halls, Validation Machines, and Mensa.

We would like to express our sincere appreciation to everyone who participated. We hope that these tours have inspired you and provided a glimpse into the bright future that awaits you. Your journey into the world of astrophysics has just begun, and we are excited to see where it takes you!
